In addition to demonstrating competencies in clinical assessment and intervention, an understanding of psychology as a science is a critical component of becoming a professional psychologist, especially for those working in interdisciplinary health care settings. An understanding of causal factors is necessary before interventions can be developed. Rehabilitation psychology, clinical neuropsychology, and health psychology have all made important contributions to our understanding of the causes of various psychological conditions and their impact on overall health and quality of life.
Although specific research competencies and requirements may differ across graduate training programs, depending on the orientation of the program (e.g., clinical scientist, scientist-practitioner, practitioner-scholar), training in research and translation of research to practice are required for accreditation by APA, APS, and other accrediting bodies.
