A SUGGESTED TIMELINE FOR INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS

JULY
- Update your curriculum vitae.
- Consider your personal and professional strengths and weaknesses. How can you use these to guide your goals for internship?
- Create a list of your goals for internship year.
- Begin to study internship programs using the national APPIC directory.
- Download a sample of the APPI internship application and get to know its requirements.
- Make a rough list of the programs that interest you and appear to be a fit for your needs.
- Seek advice on the process from trusted friends/classmates.
- Consider potential letter of recommendation writers. Be mindful of finding a diversity of writers who know you well.
- Join the appropriate listservs to get the latest internship updates.
AUGUST
- Begin to narrow down your list of programs. Learn about each in detail and weight carefully whether they fit your needs/goals.
- Begin to craft rough drafts of your essays and cover letters.
- Schedule a meeting with your faculty advisors and any potential letter of recommendation writers. Use this meeting to: 1) ask about getting a letter of recommendation, 2) discuss strengths/weaknesses, 3) review your program list, and 4) ask if they would be willing to provide feedback on your application including hour totals, essays, cover letter, and/or curriculum vitae next month.
- You may also wish to ask a trusted friend/classmate or two review your materials next month. However, keep in mind that the more people look over your materials and provide feedback, the more you run the risk of them not reflecting your own voice. Be judicious in who you ask to review your application materials. More is not necessarily always better.
SEPTEMBER
- Finalize your list of programs and make sure you know about each in detail.
- Complete first drafts of curriculum vitae, cover letters, and essays.
- Request official transcript copies in adherence with APPIC procedures.
- Register for the Application for Internship (APPI) via APPIC and for the match via National Match Services
.
- Input all necessary information for the APPI except for your curriculum vitae, cover letters, and essays.
- Prepare a packet of information for your letter of recommendation writers. This could include: 1) a summary of personal contact you've had with the individual to "jog" their memory, 2) summary of relevant application-related information, 3) alphabetized site list with program director names included, 4) curriculum vitae draft, 4) cover letter drafts, and 5) essay drafts. This will make it very easy for your letter writers to craft a glowing letter! Please be sure to provide them with at least 3 weeks
to complete all of your letters, and provide timely reminders along the way. You are able to check and see that they have been submitted on the APPI website.
OCTOBER
- Finalize your curriculum vitae, cover letters, and essays using the feedback provided by others.
- Finish uploading all of your materials onto the APPI website.
- Refresh yourself on application due dates, as many will be due this month or early in November.
- The APPI website will create a pdf file of each application that you can save and review.
- Proofread each application at least twice before hitting that submit button.
NOVEMBER - DECEMBER
- Prepare for interview offers. Some emails allow you to set text alerts to emails containing specific words. If you do this, you could be notified quickly of an interview offer and get your most desired interview date. They go very quickly!
- Print off monthly calendars and pencil in your top two choice dates for all sites. That way, you are ready with an answer when the offer comes in - and have an alternative date ready if your top choice is already taken.
- Review some sample interview questions and prepare answers. Review your answers and keep editing them for clarity and brevity.
- Schedule a practice interview...two is even better, and with multiple individuals if possible.
- Assess your professional attire. If needed, purchase new clothes, shoes, or accessories. Three words: Black Friday sales!
- Take a look at your travel gear. Do you need a new suitcase? New briefcase? What might you need to stay comfortable?
DECEMBER - JANUARY
- Get your interview on! Be sure to bring a notebook to take notes on your impressions during or after the interview.
- Make friendly with the other applicants you meet. You just may find some new friends!
- Be sure to practice self-care during the hectic interview and travel phase of this process. Try to eat healthy, drink lots of water, and dallow yourself time to sleep for rest and recharging! Practice good stress management. Lean on your support system.
- Check out our tips on preparing for internship interview travel.
FEBRUARY
- Complete your interviews.
- Create a rough draft of your site rankings
, and seek feedback from a trusted individual or two.
- Submit your rankings online through National Match Services per the annual deadline (changes each year).
- Match for internship on Phase I Match Day!
- Should you not match, you will immediately prepare new applications, submit, conduct brief telephone/video interviews, and rank to match with any remaining programs during the Phase II Match.
MARCH
- Submit your rankings online through National Match Services per the annual deadline (changes each year).
- Match for internship on Phase II Match Day!
- Should you not match, seek the guidance of your mentors and training director. Seek support from family, friends, and peers.
