Psychologists in health settings provide a variety of different interventions to a wide range of patients. For example, health service psychologists may help patients adjust to a new illness; manage symptoms such as chronic pain, anxiety, and depression; develop and maintain new healthy behaviors; and recover from an injury. In addition, some health service psychologists may promote health and well-being in healthy populations. There are a variety of interventions that can be implemented with different populations in varying settings. However, we recommend using an evidence-based behavioral practice approach when deciding what intervention to implement.
Evidence-based behavioral interventions have shown efficacy in a research setting. The three components of evidence-based behavioral practice include: (1) evaluating the best-available research evidence for treating a specific condition; (2) take the patient’s characteristics and preferences into account when choosing a therapeutic approach; and (3) evaluate the clinician's expertise (Spring, 2007). There are several resources to determine what interventions are evidence-based, including manuals and textbooks (such as Barlow's (2007) guide), recent meta-analyses or reviews, and online clinical resources such as Up to Date. We have also included several intervention resources in the WIHPT.
